Finding God’s Sweet Spot for Your Life
There was once a town whose only residents were ducks. It looked like any small city—schools, shops, homes, even churches—but everywhere the ducks went, they walked. They waddled to work, waddled to dinner, and waddled through life.
Each Sunday, they faithfully waddled to church, but on one particular Sunday, the church was full. The pastor stepped into the pulpit and preached a message unlike any they’d heard before. “Ducks,” he said, “God has given you wings! With these wings, you can fly! You were not created just to waddle through life. You were made to soar—to rise above fear, sin, limitation, and complacency. Spread your wings and live the life God created you for!”
The ducks in the congregation were stirred. One duck near the front was so moved that he stood up, stretched out his wings, and before he knew it, he was flying! Around the sanctuary he soared, filled with joy and praise! Inspired, others followed, and soon the entire sanctuary was filled with ducks flying, praising, and rejoicing.
It was a moment of transformation. A glimpse of what could be. Eventually, the pastor calmed them down and gave the benediction. But when the service ended, all the ducks picked up their things—and waddled back home. They returned to the same routines, the same struggles, the same patterns—as if they had never been reminded that they could fly.
How often do we go to church on Sunday, engage in powerful worship, then walk out the door unchanged? I know I’ve fallen into this trap many times before. There was a season in my life when walking with God felt like a distant memory. I was born again and engaged in worship week after week, but my heart was cold, and I would leave church as if nothing had happened.
My name is Jamie Kent, and I am the newest T7R contributor and coordinator. I am excited to see what God is already doing through this ministry, and I look forward to all He will do! My prayer for this ministry is that people would not just grow in faith but be transformed in their walk with Christ.
When our walk with God goes cold, it keeps us from hearing His voice and keeps us out of the mission He has for our lives. If we’ve surrendered our lives to Christ, He has given each of us unique spiritual gifts to further His Kingdom. But if we ignore His leading or fail to walk in step with Him, we miss the mission He has set before us.
So how do we break out of complacency? By focusing our effort on the mission God has given us. When we live with focus, we live in the “sweet spot” of God’s calling. We may worry about knowing His will, but when we recognize our gifts and tap into the passions He has given us, we find ourselves in that sweet spot and live on mission with Him. On mission, there is no time for complacency—we are focused on building the Kingdom.
Psalm 37:23–24 says, “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in Him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with His hand.” When we focus our effort, we stay on the path God has set before us, and while that path may be difficult, He will uphold us.
God has given me many passions, but my greatest passion is helping people grow in their faith. Nothing excites me more than hearing how God is working in someone’s life or what He is showing them through His Word. A few years ago, I crafted a personal mission statement that encompasses every aspect of my life—from work to church ministry. The beauty of a mission statement is that it keeps us focused on the main thing, rather than chasing empty pursuits. A mission statement should succinctly summarize your gifts and passions in one or two sentences, serving as a guiding compass for your life.
My mission statement comes from Psalm 84:10: “A single day in your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else! I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.” I love this imagery of someone standing at a door, welcoming people to the Throne of Grace, much like a greeter on Sunday morning. With that in mind, my mission statement is: “I exist to be a door holder in the Kingdom of God through teaching, worship, and acts of service.”
This statement encompasses my passions and gifts. Since writing it, I’ve fully embraced this call on my life. It has also helped me evaluate my commitments and filter out activities that are not aligned with that mission. Walking in my mission statement keeps me focused on what matters most: bringing people to Christ and helping them grow.
Each of us carries a unique and powerful calling. My prayer is that as you dedicate yourself to the mission God has placed on your heart, you will spread your wings, leave complacency behind, and step into the joy and fullness of the abundant life He has prepared for you—fully engaged in building His Kingdom.
Soli Deo Gloria!
