I got exhausted when my kids were young and asked me "why" questions. It turns out they had it right. Until we understand the "why," the what and the how lose their mojo, and in the spiritual realm, we become religious robots. God never intended for our relationship with him to be dynamic, not robotic. And when we ask God "why," he gives all the necessary answers.
Jesus told his disciples he needed to go, but they would not be left alone. "Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you." (John 16:7). So why do we need the Holy Spirit and what is the advantage? Let me give you several big ones:
Empower our Witness: The Holy Spirit empowers believers to fulfill the Great Commission (Acts 1:8).
Stay on Track with Truth: In John 16:13, Jesus says the Spirit of Truth will guide believers into all truth. The Holy Spirit helps individuals understand Scripture, discern God's will, and make righteous decisions.
Show Us Where We're Missing It: The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8-11), leading people toward repentance, faith, and a deepening relationship with Christ.
Transformation of Character: The Spirit works within believers to produce the "fruit of the Spirit" (Galatians 5:22-23): love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, shaping us into Christ's likeness.
Assurance of Salvation: The Holy Spirit is a seal and guarantee of believers' salvation (Ephesians 1:13-14), providing inner assurance of their relationship with God.
Helps us Pray: Romans 8:26-27 teaches that the Holy Spirit helps believers in prayer, interceding on their behalf, especially when they don't know what to pray for.
Why the Holy Spirit? Because He gives us an advantage that can’t afford to be left unredeemed. This is supernatural movements of the Spirit that comport with truth and are not to be feared. When you open the word and ask God “why” the Holy Spirit, the evidence is profound.

Jesus did give all the necessary answers, as you said. There was still a lot of confusion and wondering in the disciples minds I'm sure. Sometimes we as Christians can't answer all the questions people demand from us. Then they claim if we can't answer it it's some kind of win on their side. It's just revelation. The Holy Spirit doesn't plonk everything on us at once. He gently guides and teaches throughout time what we need to know.
This is so sweet I'm going to cry. I love the Holy Spirit. A wonderful gift Jesus gave us after he left the earth before he returns.
